Anxiety is a symptom....

Anxiety is a symptom of stress. It usually shows up in your life as a warning sign, of something that needs to change in your life.  I also think that anxiety is a symptom of our culture and society and the way we are living such fast paced, stressful, pressure bound lives.

I have spoken a few times on this blog about my struggles with anxiety, which has showed up at various times throughout my life due to different circumstances. Sometimes it has been mild, sometimes it has been debilitating for years.
Each time it showed up, there were different circumstances around it but there was always a reason, there was always something wrong. Even if I didn't want to admit it, even when I could rationalize every part of the situation, I could not ignore the feeling. 

Typical reasons being: 

People I was spending time with or in a relationship with
The way I was treating my body, lifestyle choices etc.
Being overwhelmed with stress
Unhappiness in my job
Feeling I couldn't control my life/situation I was stuck in
Not doing the things that made me happy
Feeling disrespected
Suppressing emotions
Ignoring my true feelings

To me, anxiety is my soul screaming. I can feel there's something wrong but for whatever reason, it feels impossible to change, it feels easier to just keep going, that you have no choice but to keep going.

But I want you to know, it's not easier to do that, and the first part of living an anxiety free life, probably starts with making that really hard change and being really, really honest with yourself about those parts of your life that need to be addressed.

Life is not about struggling all the time and waiting for fleeting moments of happiness or escape.
It worries me that people seem to totally disregard their mental health and their true feelings. Your brain is an important organ and if you were experiencing pain or discomfort in any other area of your body you would seek ways to look after it, heal it or treat it.

Treating anxiety though usually means treating a lot of areas in your life, and it's hard work. It's work that requires patience, it's inner work that may be totally foreign to you, or uncomfortable to begin with. But it's also the most important work you'll ever do.

I saw this quote/image on pinterest and I was like 'YES!' this sums up so much in just a few lines, and the reason I'm writing this post, because when you peel back all those layers, it starts with this.
